A Great Dentist

What is considered a dental emergency?

Anyone can experience a dental emergency at any time. However, patients aren’t always certain whether what they’re experiencing actually constitutes an emergency. If that’s the case, always feel free to reach out to our dedicated dental team at North Tampa Dentistry. We are here to help you through any dental emergency you may experience.

Pain is not always a good barometer for whether or not your situation requires emergency care. Some situations where we might want to see you right away may also be relatively pain-free for you, like when you lose a filling or a crown. In other cases, like with a severe toothache, pain may be what prompts your emergency visit.

Toothaches are the most common dental emergency we treat at North Tampa Dentistry. This is often because patients try to put off treatment, hoping that a toothache will fade or disappear.

Unfortunately, toothaches generally don’t just resolve on their own. To help prevent emergency treatment due to toothaches, you should see a dentist as soon as you begin experiencing pain.

These are a few of the other dental emergencies that we treat most commonly:

  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • A tooth abscess or oral infection
  • A lost crown or filling
  • Swelling
  • Bleeding

If you are having any dental problems, it’s always best to reach out to our office as soon as possible, especially if you’ve suffered an injury, like a knocked-out tooth. Some dental treatments, like reimplantation of a knocked-out tooth, are time-sensitive. Other dental emergencies, such as a tooth abscess, may progress into a more severe medical emergency if left untreated.

No matter what your dental emergency is, Dr. Roberto Bellegarrigue is here to help. Simply reach out to our knowledgeable staff for assistance.

Sedation Dentistry for Your Emergency

Our first goal in treating your dental emergencies is to help relieve any pain or anxiety you are experiencing. Sedation dentistry is an excellent way for our team to ease discomfort and nervousness in patients who are having a dental emergency.

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that can help to calm and relax you during your emergency appointment. This sedation method is popular among our patients because its effects fade quickly, so they’re able to drive themselves to and from the appointment.

We also offer oral sedation. However, that is generally reserved for patients with higher anxiety, patients receiving more complex treatments, or for patients who are having multiple treatments performed in one appointment. Oral sedation provides deeper sedation than nitrous oxide does and requires more planning. You must have someone drive you to and from your appointment if you choose this oral sedation method.
